One of the most awesome weddings I shot this year was the wedding of Melissa and Che, a typical Amsterdam couple with two cute kids.

They got married at Vuurtoren island: a very small island (as far as you can call that) in the IJmeer lake that’s sort of next to the city. On the island there’s an old fort and a lighthouse, and nothing more basically. A few years ago, a couple of people decided it would be a great place to organise dinners and since then, there’s a seasonal restaurant which can only be reached by boat. You have to reserve (very far in advance) for a combined boat ticket and dinner arrangement.

Melissa and Che figured this would be the perfect spot for their wedding and they managed to sort it out! My day started near the quay where the guests gathered and waited for the couple. From there, off we went by boat to the island. The whole day (ceremony, reception and dinner) took place there, and on the way back to Amsterdam (which doesn’t take very long) the boat was transferred in a big party boat! A surreal, Apocalypse Now-esque, experience, with the music bouncing over the water and everyone dancing and having the time of their lives!

This is one I will remember for a long day; such a great laid back atmosphere, good food and unusual scenes are really great to photograph.
